Boo! It’s scary how productive our developer team was during Spooktober. We improved the JavaScript translation engine to support more and more unusual websites. We also added new features to the language selector and as well as AI translation. Read the full article for all the details!

Compatibility

This is the most important aspect of Easyling. You can just plug it in to any website, and it’ll very likely work. In the rare case when it doesn’t, our development team is on the case. This month, we discovered an incompatibility with React Server Components when using the JavaScript translation engine with a CDN for publishing either in a subdomain or a subdirectory. We now ensure that all the appropriate headers are passed on throughout.

Additionally, we added support for re-translating images when they are changed after the page loads. This can work well for some specific carousel implementations.

Language selector

We offer multiple language selectors. This month, we focused on improving “variant 3” of them. This variant offers a lot more configuration options compared to the previous ones, and we keep adding more and more. It offers three subtypes: Sidebar, Dropdown and Floating. For these variants, you can specify text and background colours, you can edit the icons as well as the way the languages are displayed. It is now also possible to apply these changes to the source language, including removing it if you prefer.

AI translation

AI translation leverages large language models to translate and post edit the content. This system tends to stray further away from direct mirror translations, which can result in content more appropriate for the target language. For example, it can be aware that Toyota calls the MR2 sportscar just “MR” in France to avoid the name sounding like the word for excrement.

We found that the quality of AI translation varies wildly depending on the amount of training content in the given language. This issue is even worse, when both the source and target languages are underrepresented. Let’s take two small European languages as an example, Hungarian and Slovakian. While translating these languages to and from English is okay, direct translation between them is a challenge for even the largest LLMs. This month, we introduced a feature, where target languages don’t have to be translated from the source, but we can do so from any target language. Just by adding English to the mix, we can significantly improve the quality of the AI translation.

Miscellaneous

We always have these smaller, but very impactful improvements:

• We noticed that sometimes servers erroneously send responses that contain 0 bits. These responses are now detected, and we make sure not to cache them. So, when the server is back to normal operation, the translated sites can come back online without intervention.
• We are re-working the way parameters for the JS embed code are handled. We’re migrating them to a new system very slowly. If they have been migrated on your project, you will see these options disabled. Don’t worry, you’ll be able to change them via the new system shortly.
