Easyling release notes November, 2025

November was a crucial month for Crest, our JavaScript-based translation engine. We optimised its speed and the SEO features. This ensures that the visitors’ experience is improved on all translated sites whether that visitor is a human experiencing faster loading or a bot noticing the improved SEO features. We also added a new content connector and many others. This is exciting, so I may end up being a bit technical. Don’t be frightened by that though. Read the article for the details!

Crest speed improvements

As Crest runs in the visitor’s browser to translate the website, particularly large projects (with word counts in the millions) would experience slowdowns as the translations are downloaded. Naturally, we can’t leave large projects behind - they are the ones who benefit the most from the automations that Easyling offers. One way to speed this up is via caching. In a nutshell, this saves computing effort by re-using the results of previous calculations when appropriate. While the effect of this is different project-to-project, large project will see a significant speedup from this development.

Language selector

We found that creating a custom selector for every website is too much effort for smaller businesses. We hear your feedback, so we continuously add more and more features and options to the selectors we provide. The dropdown language selector, for example, has the name of the language translated to the given language. As a result, French will be displayed as français. Unlike in English, in French, it’s not required to capitalise the name of languages.

This month, we added an option to capitalise all of these names. This stylistic choice can make the display of languages more uniform.

Sanity content connector (beta)

Sanity is a powerful system for creating websites. It allows you to author content and create pages that really pop. To achieve this high degree of customisability, it uses specific JavaScript techniques that make JS-based translations quite challenging. To ensure that we can provide a seamless experience, we created a content connector for this CMS. This allows us to extract the content directly from the CMS and then put it back directly into there too, ensuring a smooth user experience.

Stay tuned for new on how to enable this if you have a Sanity-based website, or reach out to us at support@easyling.com!

Don’t import translations that are the same as the source

With some specific workflows, XLIFFs may incorrectly contain the source content mirrored as translations. When importing these XLIFFs, those segments would be marked as translated, so they wouldn’t be included in further exports where only untranslated entries are requested.

To work around this, we added an option to skip importing these. This way, these segments will stay marked as untranslated, so that you can work through them later.

Crest SEO improvement with NextJS

NextJS is a popular framework that can make developers’ lives easier when programming websites. It makes it easy to create dynamic elements on pages. However, when page elements are adjusted unexpectedly, say by a translation script like Crest, NextJS will undo those changes. Normally this is great to ensure that the page’s state stays consistent. However, this would result in SEO-related tags being removed immediately after being inserted. We worked together with the developers of a NextJS app to adjust Crest so that these SEO tags aren’t unexpected anymore.

Miscellaneous

As usual, we have a few bits that can’t get their own section. I’d be slightly surprised if you read this far anyway.

  • Crest now starts by going through every link and ensuring they point to the translated site.
  • It also doesn’t edit links that it previously placed anymore. This was a bug we fixed.
  • We added new elements to the known bot lists.
  • We found and fixed an issue where while creating a new project, it would accidentally create two of them.
